Makeup - Readers Dilemma - Traditional v Contemporary

Help

I am getting married next summer and I have chosen my dream outfit in red with antique gold embellishments. My mother-in-law is very involved with the entire wedding and especially what I am wearing. We are at a disagreement at the moment about my makeup.

I would like a contemporary smoky eye look with understated lips but my mother-in-law is insisting that I go for a more traditional look with kohl on my eyes and red lips as she said this is how a bride should look.

I had my heart set on dramatic eyes but I am confused now. I don’t want to look back on my wedding pictures and not feel like a bride, Should I go for the traditional look?

Dear Confused Future Dulhan,

First and foremost you need to look back at your makeup looks recently and ask yourself, what looks made me feel my best? And would certain colours and shades compliment my outfit and my skin tone? If you are still unsure then go for a makeup trial and have your jewellery and headpiece with you. You may surprise yourself at how much you love the traditional look.. Or you may dislike it so much that seeing a vision of what you might end up looking like will give you the confirmation that red is not for you at all.

Ultimately, it’s your wedding day and what you want to look like overrides anybody else’s personal opinion. Lets face it, we can’t please everybody and this is one aspect of your day in which you should 100% please yourself.

Both looks are beautiful, but which is for you?

What do you guys think? What should she do?

If you are already married, when did you get married and what type of makeup look did you go for?

If you aren’t married yet then what looks are you hoping to have on your big day?

Makeup Mondays – How to deal with a pushy MUA

It’s Double December! That means two makeup posts each Monday for the next four weeks. Enjoy.

Before we begin let me assure you that most makeup artists are absolutely lovely to work with and hire. They love what they do and they know how to do it well. But occasionally you come across the slightly smug ones who have experience and a reputation which makes them seem to think that they know what’s best, regardless of what you, the bride think or want.

This is dedicated to all the smuggy MUA’s out there to let them know that it’s ok to stand back and listen to the bride. And for the brides to be out there that it’s ok to let the MUA know that you are not 100% happy with the look.

A professional MUA will always understand that you have envisioned this day since you were a little girl and as an adult that you have a personal taste and style which you don’t want to venture too far from.

Remember, your wedding day is not the day you really want to be experimenting with a ‘look’ that you don’t feel totally comfortable with. You should feel relaxed and happy with your makeup. If you don’t like your look, it will show on your face (pun intended). And to top it off, you will have hundreds of photos serving as a reminder of your big day. So you want to look back with happy memories of your makeup.

So you book your appointment for your trial, at that point, the MUA should know exactly what colours are in your outfit so she can organise her products and tools accordingly. If the MUA doesn’t ask, you should say anyway.

Before and during your appointment, if you feel the colours aren’t right or the application isn’t pleasing you, let the MUA know. Some people find confrontation hard but you are going to be handing over a large chunk of cash so ensure it’s well spent.

If the MUA insists the makeup needs to look a certain way then hear her out, it might look amazing. But if you don’t like the end result then let them know. Pinpoint parts that you like and highlight parts that you don’t agree with. If need be then arrange another trial either with the same MUA or a different one to create the look you want.

Don’t feel bad for not booking the MUA, again, a professional will always understand and if they are as popular as they say they are then they will have dozens of brides to be in their diaries.

Story time

I was asked attend a makeup trial by a bride (to give my opinion as friend). This bride was wearing a gorgeous red and bronze outfit. The MUA applied red and yellow gold eye shadow and red lipstick. Don’t get me wrong, the eye shadow was applied and blended beautifully. However, there was no yellow gold in the outfit, or accessories, and the bride had never worn red lips in her life.

The bride asked what I thought. My face said it all. So putting the eye makeup aside I asked the MUA to try another lip colour as the bride didn’t like red. The MUA insisted that she wear red ‘because it’s her wedding day’. After a heated debate (me and the MUA), me saying she should feel happy with her look, MUA saying brides should wear red lips (should they? That’s a whole other post) she took her payment and left.

It took the bride 3 days and a trial with another MUA to cancel the red lip loving MUA. She needed a little support but she got there, stood up for her personal taste and style, and what she felt comfortable wearing. And she looked beautiful on her day.

The Happy Bride!!

What are your thoughts and experiences on over confident makeup artists? Do they have every right to tell you how you should look or should they listen to the bride even when they strongly disagree with her?

Makeup Monday - Q & A

You have been emailing and leaving questions and now we have a super duper team of talent makeup to give you the answers ~

Question
Can you recommend a good foundation to use on brides that are especially of a brown/tan skin colour?

Answers
Nahid Khan Mua ~ Try Bobbi Brown as they have a good colour range for darker skins. If your wanting to use  a Superdrug or Boots brand then try Sleek or Revlon photo ready as they are good too x

Kam Sahota Mua ~ Mac Pro Full Coverage foundation provides brides with a flawless, photo finish coverage. It comes in all shades and is long lasting. It's the foundation I used on my wedding day x

Ravita Pannu Artiste ~ Its all about Full coverage another mua introduced me to this product {Mac Pro Full Coverage} and i now use it on my clients...its amazing stuff! it really does do what it says on the tin, flawless coverage without making the skin look dull...its brilliant for brides especially!

Question
The makeup artist I have booked for my bridal, is asking to me provide her with false lashes, lipstick and foundation is that normal?

Answer
Mua Rujina Mua ~ Depending on how much they're charging some artists may ask you to provide them with lashes. However if they are a professional make up artist that should mean they have a comprehensive kit!!! Therefore there is NO need to ask for foundation or lipstick, unless they are asking you to have the lipstick in order to top up throughout the day. Same does not not apply regarding foundation and you would only need to powder should you have oily skin. So this is not normal NO!!! Hope this helps.

Nahid Khan Mua ~ A professional mua does not ask you to bring the kit as we are the make up artist we should have the kit ready on a wedding day some make up artist require you to have a lipstick for touch up as its a long day or if you do not have the same colour they will put some in a little tub for you so it matches with the rest of the make up if its party make up some Make up artist ask you to get the lashes but if its bridal then definitely not !! hope this helps x

Ravita Pannu Artiste ~ Within in my packages i offer all the above. Lipstick shade is arranged/confirmed almost at the consultation/trial initially. It is then recommended that the bride purchase the same shade so she is able to touch up as and when required. However for the bride to provide her own lipstick is a not normal...False lashes should be also covered in the package with the mua and at that a range of lash sets to suit the eye shape, not just one standard set...as lashes can make or break the overall look achieved or that wanting to be achieved. As for foundation...its vital that any freelancing makeup artiste has a range of suitable shades etc to apply on the ranging clients that the mua may work with. i find it unacceptable that a mua would even consider saying to a potential client to provide your own base...
