Makeup - Readers Dilemma - Traditional v Contemporary

Help

I am getting married next summer and I have chosen my dream outfit in red with antique gold embellishments. My mother-in-law is very involved with the entire wedding and especially what I am wearing. We are at a disagreement at the moment about my makeup.

I would like a contemporary smoky eye look with understated lips but my mother-in-law is insisting that I go for a more traditional look with kohl on my eyes and red lips as she said this is how a bride should look.

I had my heart set on dramatic eyes but I am confused now. I don’t want to look back on my wedding pictures and not feel like a bride, Should I go for the traditional look?

Dear Confused Future Dulhan,

First and foremost you need to look back at your makeup looks recently and ask yourself, what looks made me feel my best? And would certain colours and shades compliment my outfit and my skin tone? If you are still unsure then go for a makeup trial and have your jewellery and headpiece with you. You may surprise yourself at how much you love the traditional look.. Or you may dislike it so much that seeing a vision of what you might end up looking like will give you the confirmation that red is not for you at all.

Ultimately, it’s your wedding day and what you want to look like overrides anybody else’s personal opinion. Lets face it, we can’t please everybody and this is one aspect of your day in which you should 100% please yourself.

Both looks are beautiful, but which is for you?

What do you guys think? What should she do?

If you are already married, when did you get married and what type of makeup look did you go for?

If you aren’t married yet then what looks are you hoping to have on your big day?

Makeup Monday ~ Doing your own Wedding/Engagement Makeup!

The question of doing your own makeup, comes up quite regularly from you lovelies, for many reasons, but budget is usually the main one, and engagement is the one people want to tackle first, since the wedding is the bigger function.

When Kate Middleton married early this year there was almost a buzz about doing your own makeup, but she wasn't alone in the making of her look, she had a few lessons from a professional makeup artist.

I'm going to cover some areas you should think about, and tips that have been given from various makeup artist, i feel its a little difficult, to talk about exactly what products you should use or look you should go for, since we all have different skin, tones, budget's and features.

You Tube ~ I can't begin to tell you how much you can learn from makeup tutorials, the best part is you can follow step by step, get an ideas for what products to get, high end and drug store, and see the finished look! oh and stop and start :) ones i love are. makeup geek MakeupAdikt lisa eldridge pixiwoo huda oxfordjasmine Sadaf

Think about getting some professional help ~ this is especially for you that are not to confident with makeup, many makeup counters and MUA offer this serve, just discuss in advance what your after * note when at the counter, just because your having a lesson doesn't mean you have to buy every product used! and ask lots of questions! ones to try MAC & bobbi brown

Good Skin Care Routine ~ no amount of makeup can compensate for glowing skin! Drink that water and go for facials.

Eyebrows ~ if their sparse, you know the script get growing, on the day make sure their neat, threading is my fave option, again super important, a defined brow frames the face and gives an altogether more 'put together' look.

Mani/Pedi ~  not only is it relaxing, but having a manicure and pedicure, will give you a really polished look
* The actual polishes used on Kate Middleton were Bourjois Rose Lounge and Essie Allure to create a perfect light and subtle pink polish

Get A Tan ~ not for everyone, but if you on the pale side, then apply some tanner, to give you albeit, fake, but subtle glow. {in turn you'll use less makeup}I like Clarins Liquid Bronze Self Tanning for Face and Decollete

Be prepared ~ The main thing is you want to look beautiful all day and you need to be photogenic for picture. look for products that have staying power, and instead of adding more product on your face throughout the day, when you detect unwelcome shine, make use of blotter papers to absorb excess oils.

Get the Look & Look like you Spend time figuring out what looks good on you, what will you be wearing, how will your hair be, check out mags, personally I don think you should be trying any way out there looks, even if your confident with makeup, you want to look like you just way better, so the key is the highlight your best features.

Get the Best ~ this goes for tool, ie brushes, & makeup, and that doesn't always mean the most expensive, just get the best tools you can afford and something that cant be stressed enough, blend blend blend!.

please keep in mind, that doing your own makeup does not mean you need to go out and buy a whole new collection of makeup, once you have a look you want to go for, you will be able to look for key products, and confidence is key! and although its an oldies practice really does make perfect, and that's were the confidence will come in, when you know you have perfected your look!!

Don't forget your best beauty feature on your day...your SMILE!

Love to know what you think, leave a comment if you have any tips

Maya xoxo

Makeup Monday ~ MAC concealers COMPARISONS

How about some complexion camouflage?

Very few of us are blessed with flawless skin, for those of us who aren’t; the lovely people at MAC have provided us with five different concealers to get us there. I have tried and tested four.

Select Cover-up concealer - £13.50 comes in 16 shades

This comes in a small tube so can be applied easily using the fingers or a concealer brush by squeezing a bit on the back of your hand. It melts easily into the skin and gives a smooth and natural finish. It lasts for best part of the day but it’s better for daytime use as it gives light to medium coverage so I wouldn’t recommend it for evening or wedding makeup. It’s definitely something you can keep in your handbag for touch-ups though. However the shades available all seem to be in the lighter end of the colour chart. This makes gives dusky skin tones less choice in terms of shade matching.

Shade choice 5/10
Coverage 7/10
Application 10/10
Durability 8/10

Studio Finish concealer £13.50 comes in 15 shades

This comes in an eyeshadow case so it needs to be applied using a concealer brush. The brush needs to be swirled into the case so it’s easy to get too much product on the brush. It needs to be blended with the brush or a cosmetic sponge as its thick in texture; however a little goes a long way. It gives a matt finish that can be cakey if not blended. It lasts from morning to night and gives high coverage so a good choice for evening and wedding makeup. It covers up scars and blemishes really well. This concealer comes in a good variety of shades so everyone has a decent choice.

Shade choice 9/10
Coverage 10/10
Application 7/10
Durability 10/10

Studio Sculpt concealer £13.50 comes in 14 shades

This comes in a pot so like the Studio finish concealer; it needs to be applied using a concealer brush. The brush can be dipped into the pot and excess product removed before application. It can be blended in using your fingers as its very light and creamy in texture. It gives a natural finish and gives medium to high coverage so can be used for evening and bridal makeup. It covers up blemishes but requires a double coat over foundation to cover up dark scars. This concealer is a let down in the shade department as the shades available are mostly light to medium.

Shade choice 6/10
Coverage 10/10
Application 9/10
Durability 10/10

Pro Longwear concealer £13.50 comes in 15 shades

This comes in a small pump so can be applied easily by brush or using the fingers by squeezing a bit on the back of your hand. It melts nicely into the skin and gives a smooth and natural finish. It does last from morning to night and gives medium coverage so I would recommend it for evening but it doesn’t cover deep scars well, it requires a double coat over foundation. It also pumps too much product in one go so I feel it wastes the product. It’s the best choice in the shade department though as it comes in a good range of shades.

Shade choice 10/10
Coverage 8/10
Application 4/10
Durability 8/10

Have you used any of these concealers? be great to hear what you think?
